Drums & Percussion

The aim of our school is to offer a holistic approach to the art of percussion playing. We have a great team of dedicated and professional tutors, all of which are prominent drummers and percussionists in the local scene with years of experience locally and internationally. From pop to rock, jazz, classical and world music, our tutors are each established in their own field.

Drum Set

The course consists of a series of individual lessons and is divided into one lesson per week for four terms throughout the year. The lessons focus on every aspect of drum playing, from pursuing an in-depth study of styles to technique and musicality.

The students are grouped under 3 different levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced.Students have the option to sit for the Trinity College Examinations.

Classical Percussion

The Classical and Tuned Percussion course aims to develop basic knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to classical percussion performance, with
emphasize on basic percussion technique on a wide range of instruments.  The course will help the students develop a stronger technical and interpretative ability on tuned and unturned percussion, with a specific focus on the keyboard instrument. Student will develop the ability of playing in an ensemble and explore a diverse repertoire.

Music Theory

The Music Theory for drummers and percussionists is a course designed to enhance music skills and basic music fundamental. The course focuses also on sight singing, ear training, and dictation, as well as the rudiments of written theory. Sessions are held in small groups

Students have the option to sit for the Trinity College examinations.

Workshops

Every scholastic year we launch a diverse series of drums and percussion workshops. The aim of these workshops is to bring students together, introduce them to new techniques, ideas, styles and performance opportunities.

Daniel Cauchi

Percussionist and singerDaniel Cauchi holds the post of principal percussion with the Malta National Philharmonic Orchestra and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta. He graduated from the University of Malta and furthered his studies in percussion at the music conservatory of Latina (Italy).  Daniel Cauchi is the founder, leader and singer of Big Band Brothers.

He produced and directed various concerts namely KUBU, a commission for the Malta Arts Festival, “Kelma Kelma Nota Nota” and “Ftakar” concerts amongst others.  Ha has collaborated with a number of artists and ensembles from all over the world and presented a number of recitals and concerts. Daniel is the lead singer of Kafena with whom he has recorded the album “Lukanda Propaganda”. Daniel also recorded the music of Maltese contemporary composers namely Joseph Vella, Ruben Zahra and Christopher Muscat

Daniel has been invited to perform in ChinaHong Kong, India, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Germany, England, France, Belgium, Canada, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, and Tunisia.

Robert Spiteri

Robert Spiteri is a 23 year old, professional drummer and drum tutor. He has been involved in the local music scene for the past 15 years. Robert has played with a number of Maltese acts, including Beige, Relikc and Fire. He is currently responsible for drumming duties for the bands Big Band Brothers and Red Electrick, performing both locally and abroad. Robert has also been invloved in many different projects as a session drummer. He has recorded on a number of albums, including Albert Bell’s solo project, as well as Daniel Cauchi & Kris Spiteri’s Kafena, amongst others. He has also worked with the Malta Philarmonic Orchestra in projects including Rockestra and as part of the MPO Percussion Ensemble.

Robert Spiteri has been teaching at ‘The Box’ since 2013.

Luke Briffa

Luke started to play the drum kit under the the tuition of Alex Debono and studied music jazz/popular theory with Kris Spiteri. He furthered his studies in Holland with Joost Kesselaar, Lucas Van Merwijk, Steve Clover and Andre Groen. Briffa also attended lessons thought by Bill Stewart, Jochen Reuckert, John Riley, Benny Greb amongst others. Luke graduated with honours in Music Studies from the University of Malta under the guidance of Daniel Cauchi.

Luke has played and recorded material with various artists namely Carrie Haber, Alex Alden, Sixth Sinfoni, Renzo Spiteri, CUSP, The Jazz Combo, The Jes Psaila Project and The Malta Philharmonic orchestra.  Internationally, Luke has been instrumental in such projects as the Montaldi Project and the Kikker Trio. Luke currently forms part of a funk rock group called ‘Super Sponge Trio’.  He also plays with the gypsy swing and manouche Jazz band ‘Swing Nuages’. Luke also serves as a session musician with bands such as ‘The Busker’ and ‘The Travellers’. 

Luke Briffa has been teaching at ‘The Box’ since 2016.

Matthew Vella

Matthew Vella is a professional drummer and session artist with over 8 years’ experience as a drum tutor in Malta, London, Portugal and Switzerland.
He studied at the London Centre of Contemporary Music under the guidance of Richard Brook (Annie Lennox, Go West, Headspace) and Pete Cater (Pete Cater Big Band), where he graduated with a B.A (Hons) in Drum performance and production in 2015. During this time Matthew formed part of the LCCM Beefeaters Drumline with whom he performed at the Champions League final opening ceremony at Wembley Stadium in 2013 and the London Drum Show in 2015.

As a performing, composing and recording artist, Matthew plays drums in; Until Rain (Gr). He wrote and recorded all the drums for “Inure” released through Sensory Records (USA) in 2017. The launch of which involved an extensive European and Balkan tour, Superfecta (UK) with whom he recorded the singles “Mannequin” and “The Abyss” released through DMG records (UK) and also toured the UK in 2017. The new album “Disconnect” was released in July 2018 through Rusty Cage Recordings (UK).  As a session drummer, Matthew has recorded for a number artists in Portugal, UK and Greece.

Matthew Vella has been teaching at ‘The Box’ since 2018.
